Rare Winter Solstice Lunar Eclipse

A sight not seen in 372 years, the Total Lunar Eclipse on this winter solstice will shine its coppery red hue down upon us. It will be the first time that a total lunar eclipse coincides with the winter solstice since 1638 (UPDATED : Credit: Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory). 

On early morning this Tuesday the 21st of December, The eclipse will be visible in the Northern Hemisphere.  Starting at 1:33AM EST, the moon will be partially eclipsed.  The moon will reach totality at 2:41AM EST, and it will last a generous 72 minutes.  It will return to partiality at 3:53AM EST, and will end at 5:01AM EST.

The best time to view the coppery red hue of the totality will be during its mid-point at 3:17AM EST. 

The coppery red hue is a result of the many sunrises and sunsets ringing the Earth at the time of the eclipse. The Earth’s atmosphere scatters and bends the sunlight giving it a penny-like coppery red color.

Here’s hoping the weather in the US will allow optimal viewing of this rare event.

The complete lack of respect for Science in the face of clearly biased, religiously fueled, agenda driven drivel is embarrassing.

In short, not every Natural disaster is the result of “global warming”, “climate change”, or whatever the phrase du jour is now.

Associated Press gone wild: 2010 disaster article is unadulterated trash

2010′s world gone wild: Quakes, floods, blizzards: The Associated Press has published one of the most biased pieces of environmental science journalism in a long time,  and that’s quite a feat in itself. Indeed, there are some serious journalistic integrity issues with this clearly biased piece: the authors intersperse anecdotes with specific scientists’ quotations while playing fast and loose with the facts in order to push an agenda.  Undoubtedly, there is a considerable amount of scientific ignorance on the part of the authors, but using the human suffering associated with 2010′s natural disasters as talking points in this narrative is a new low for the Associated Press.

This article by Seth Borenstein and Julie Reed Bell deserves a thorough fact-checking and deconstruction. Keep your vomit bags and pitchforks at the ready, and hold onto your seats on this Pulitzer-prize winning fictional roller coaster…

This is an absolute masterpiece: quotations are in the boxes, comments are mine.

This was the year that the Earth struck back.   Earthquakes, heat waves, floods, volcanoes, super typhoons, blizzards, landslides and droughts killed at least a quarter million people in 2010 – the deadliest year in more than a generation. More people were killed worldwide by natural disasters this year than have been killed in terrorism attacks in the past 40 years combined.

What purpose does this statement serve? Is there a moral equivalence between suicide bombers and the heartbreaking suffering associated with Haiti’s earthquake, the resulting mysteriously-caused cholera epidemic, or the devastation associated with the Pakistani floods? Apparently there is, as the authors make that case that it is either human-caused or exacerbated.

And we have ourselves to blame most of the time, scientists and disaster experts say.

That didn’t take long.

Even though many catastrophes have the ring of random chance, the hand of man made this a particularly deadly, costly, extreme and weird year for everything from wild weather to earthquakes.

There is no doubt that the impoverished around the world suffer disproportionately from natural disasters: their ability to mitigate is very limited with poorly constructed buildings and standards of living that could further unravel by nature’s tragic pulling on the threads of survival. Earthquakes occur without regard to the dwellers above the ground. Tropical cyclones occur without regard to the topography in their path. Weather and seismic activity cannot be controlled; it can only be adapted to with the best possible disaster prevention. This fact is not ground breaking or in any way controversial, yet it is seemingly brought up, acknowledged, and summarily dismissed while Borenstein and Bell get to work on blaming humanity for the ills of the Earth.

Climate scientists say Earth’s climate also is changing thanks to man-made global warming, bringing extreme weather, such as heat waves and flooding.

Some climate scientists perhaps, but there is current NO peer reviewed literature that DIRECTLY connects the floods in Pakistan or the heat wave in Russia definitively to anthropogenic global warming. Indeed, there are scant scientifically diligent explanations available for the weather/climate events of 2010, but here’s one from the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory Climate Attribution or CSI outfit on the Russian heat wave. Note, this is also a draft document, and not peer reviewed (yet), but with the extent of the data analysis from inside, it has a helluva lot more weight than the word of scientists who have not demonstrated or presented similar data analysis on the Russian heat waves or the floods. Instead, as Borenstein and Bell helpfully intersperse in the article, scientists are giving expert testimony on the events without tangible evidence, but perhaps intuition, feelings, or political motivations, which are superfluous anyways to the situation at hand.

Here is NOAA’s explanation by Dr. Martin Hoerling, which has received almost no media mention anywhere, and definitely not a press-release from NOAA.

Despite this strong evidence for a warming planet, greenhouse gas forcing fails to explain the 2010 heat wave over western Russia. The natural process of atmospheric blocking, and the climate impacts induced by such blocking, are the principal cause for this heat wave. It is not known whether, or to what extent, greenhouse gas emissions may affect the frequency or intensity of blocking during summer.

AP continues:

In the summer, one weather system caused oppressive heat in Russia, while farther south it caused flooding in Pakistan that inundated 62,000 square miles, about the size of Wisconsin. That single heat-and-storm system killed almost 17,000 people, more people than all the worldwide airplane crashes in the past 15 years combined.

What in tarnation does the number of casualties associated with plane crashes have to do with anything? Simply making an academic comparison here for the readers? WUWT!

“These (weather) events would not have happened without global warming,” said Kevin Trenberth, chief of climate analysis for the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo.

How Extreme?

The article lists a series of weather events which seemingly are examples of events contemporaneously associated with the “season”, aka winter or summer aka cold/snowy, hot/dry, and some comments in parentheses.  Here’s the rundown of extreme events: blizzards over the eastern-US, Russia, and China ( always happened, still happening, and will happen again & again ) | record heat in Los Angeles on one day (Urban Heat Island effects?) | freezes in Florida (yup, happened in January 2010 and December 2010) | tropical floods in tropical Australia, and desert droughts in desert Australia | Amazon drought (though flooding in nearby Venezuela must have been missed).

Anecdote #2 (How costly?)

Ghulam Ali’s three-bedroom, one-story house in northwestern Pakistan collapsed during the floods. To rebuild, he had to borrow 50,000 rupees ($583) from friends and family.

An attempt at scientific knowledge:

Even the extremes were extreme. This year started with a good sized El Nino weather oscillation that causes all sorts of extremes worldwide. Then later in the year, the world got the mirror image weather system with a strong La Nina, which causes a different set of extremes. Having a year with both a strong El Nino and La Nina is unusual.

Almost, but not quite. Okay, it’s just untrue. La Nina is NOT the mirror image weather system of El Nino. El Nino is one mode of the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which is a 2-7 year period coupled atmosphere-ocean phenomena — it modulates the world’s weather — it is NOT weather. It is the number one mode of variability in the tropics. Someone please get these folks at the AP Wikipedia or Google or perhaps one of the experts can help them understand this. It’s like the fact checking / preparation that Larry King is known for! Here, Jerry Seinfeld talks to King who seriously thought Seinfeld’s show was canceled.  Anyways, look at the graphic from that pesky government-run NOAA website again:  when the red switches to blue, that’s when El Nino goes to La Nina, happens a lot — and if we had more than a hundred years of data, we’d see it goes back and forth, without any concern for the “human hand”.

Another attempt at scientific knowledge:

The excessive amount of extreme weather that dominated 2010 is a classic sign of man-made global warming that climate scientists have long warned about. They calculate that the killer Russian heat wave – setting a national record of 111 degrees – would happen once every 100,000 years without global warming.

This one is a a steaming-pile of you know what. Borenstein and Bell really screw the pooch in the facts department on this one: the climate scientists he is referring to is ONE blogger at Jeff Master’s Weather Underground (no, not Bill Ayers’), Rob Carver. You’ll see from my comment #13 (RyanFSU), which is not responded to, that his interpretation of the “normalized anomaly” is woefully inadequate and should be removed as it is, uh, statistical rubbish. But, Carver is cited as “climate scientists” — the AP and the drive-by media is known for these mystery quotations of plural groups: “some people say“.

“The extremes are changed in an extreme fashion,” said Greg Holland, director of the Earth System Laboratory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research.

Please, someone publish a peer-reviewed transliteration of that statement, using the evidence contained in this article.

Expert Quote #4

“The science is clear that we can expect more and more of these kinds of damaging events unless and until society’s emissions of heat-trapping gases and particles are sharply reduced.” Ecoscience author, and Science Czar John Holdren.

And, almost at the end, the AP writers manage to throw in the BP oil spill, and declare the Chilean mining crew’s 69-day ordeal as the “feel good story of the year.” WUWT!

Here’s a clue AP: if you really want to understand the world’s weather and climate, don’t look to global warming. It is an absolute pittance compared to the global reorganization of the world’s weather due to El Nino, and it will be for the foreseeable future. So, if you want the easiest, best, and most correct expert explanation for what happened in 2010 here it is:

The transition from a strong El Nino to a strong La Nina (ENSO), hardly unprecedented, dramatically changes the tropical Pacific ocean temperatures. The atmosphere and ocean, acting together in a coupled fashion, teleconnect these tropical changes to the rest of the globe — both hemispheres. Storm tracks including tropical and extratropical cyclones, large-scale weather regimes such as blocks and Rossby-wave breaking cut-off lows, and shorter-time scale oscillations such as the PNA, NAO, and AO are all NON-LINEARLY associated with ENSO.

Academically, we have only begun to scratch the surface in understanding atmospheric/climate variability — and no matter what the experts on 2010 quoted in this article purport to understand about this year’s weather, it is only hand-wavy testimony that is actually at odds with some researchers at their own government labs!

The Associated Press and agenda-driven journalists without much evidence of scientific knowledge (especially in terms of climate variability) do the entire planet a disservice by conflating anecdotes, expert testimony, political appointees’ nonsense, and real-world suffering by those afflicted by natural disasters into a self-serving, blame humanity, anti-progress screed.

Everybody loves end-of-year lists…so not to be left out, I’ve compiled the list of my Top 10 Movies of 2010.

NOTE: The list can only include movies which were released in 2010, and that I have seen (in any format). Many movies will be left off the list, but If I didn’t take the time to go see it in theaters, then it probably wouldn’t be on this list anyway.  Also, Tron : Legacy was left off the list because it hasn’t come out yet, so I haven’t seen it.

So, without further ado…The Top 10 Best Movies of 2010…

 

 

 

 

10. SALT – PG-13, 1:31   (My Rating: 3 ½ Stars)

Starring Angelina Jolie as a CIA officer, Evelyn Salt (Jolie) swore an oath to duty, honor and country. Her loyalty will be tested when a defector accuses her of being a Russian spy. Salt goes on the run, using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to elude capture. Salt's efforts to prove her innocence only serve to cast doubt on her motives, as the hunt to uncover the truth behind her identity continues and the question remains: "Who Is Salt?"-- (C) Sony

 

 

 

 

9. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice – PG, 1:51   (My Rating: 3 ½ Stars)

Walt Disney Studios, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Jon Turteltaub, the creators of the "National Treasure" franchise, present THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE -- an innovative and epic comedy adventure about a sorcerer and his hapless apprentice who are swept into the center of an ancient conflict between good and evil.

8. Alice in Wonderland – PG, 1:49   (My Rating: 3 ½ Stars)

From Walt Disney Pictures and visionary director Tim Burton comes an epic 3D fantasy adventure ALICE IN WONDERLAND, a magical and imaginative twist on some of the most beloved stories of all time. JOHNNY DEPP stars as the Mad Hatter and MIA WASIKOWSKA as 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter.

I watched it in Digital 3D and it looked Amazing. Johnny Depp was his usually good self as the Mad Hatter, and Helena Bonham Carter stole the show as the Red Queen. Another Tim Burton instant classic.

 

 

 

 

7. Robin Hood – PG-13, 2:28   (My Rating: 3 ½ Stars)

Robin Hood 

Academy Award winner Russell Crowe and visionary Director Ridley Scott (Gladiator) reunite for the untold story of the man behind the legend. In an age of oppression and shameless tyranny, an outlaw becomes the unlikely hero that saves a nation and inspires generations to fight for freedom. In this thrilling action adventure, "Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott are at their most entertaining since Gladiator" (Dan Jolin, Empire UK). Also starring Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett.

 

 

 

 

6. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader – PG, 1:52   (My Rating: 4 Stars)

The Chronicles of Narnia - The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Lucy and Edmund Pevensie return to Narnia with their cousin Eustace where they meet up with Prince Caspian for a trip across the sea aboard the royal ship The Dawn Treader. Along the way they encounter dragons, dwarf camps, and a band of lost warriors before reaching the edge of the world.

A Fun Fantasy Adventure Movie, and an excellent adaptation of the CS Lewis Classic...More people need to go watch this movie!

 

 

 

 

5. KICK-ASS – R, 1:53   (My Rating: 4 Stars)

Kick-Ass

"How come nobody's ever tried to be a superhero?" When Dave Lizewski - ordinary New York teenager and rabid comic-book geek - becomes the no nonsense vigilante Kick-Ass, he soon finds an answer to his own question: because it hurts. Overcoming all odds, though, Kick-Ass quickly becomes a phenomenon - only to be reminded that he's not the only superhero out there. As Kick-Ass gets drawn into this no-holds-barred world, the stage is set for a final showdown between the forces of good and evil.

Kick-Ass quite simply "KICKED ASS!"

 

 

 

 

4. Shutter Island – R, 2:17   (My Rating: 4 Stars)

From Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese, "Shutter Island" is the story of two U.S. marshals, Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the cost of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island's fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane.

Very suspenseful psychological thriller...Leo does a great job. Loved the ending.

 

 

 

 

3. Iron Man 2 – PG-13, 2:04  (My Rating: 4 Stars)

With the world now aware of his dual life as the armored superhero Iron Man, billionaire inventor Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) faces pressure from the government, the press, and the public to share his technology with the military. Unwilling to let go of his invention, Stark, along with Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and James "Rhodey" Rhodes (Don Cheadle) at his side, must forge new alliances -- and confront powerful enemies.

Mickey Rourke is exceptional as Tony Stark’s (Iron Man’s) nemesis, Whiplash.

 

 

 

 

2. Inception – PG-13, 2:28   (My Rating: 4 ½ Stars)

Inception

In a world where technology exists to enter the human mind through dream invasion, a single idea within one's mind can be the most dangerous weapon or the most valuable asset.

Mind-bendingly ingenious thriller which will keep you on the edge until the very end, and will leave your head spinning afterwards.

I saw it only once despite many assertions that this movie needs to be seen about 3 times before understanding it. 

Having had experience in Computer Programming, and having been caught in many Nested Loops before, I was able to keep track…But, I had to pay VERY close attention… :-)

 

 

 

 

 

And, The Number One Movie of 2010 was actually quite easy to select, having been the only movie I’ve ever given a perfect score of 5 Stars to…

This movie is part of the most successful series in movie history, but stands brilliantly on its own merits.  It ends in a cliffhanger which leaves the viewer salivating for the blockbuster conclusion.  This movie (as the whole series) has been lovingly handled with the utmost craft and determination while at the same time serving as a Who’s Who of the biggest actors in all of Britain. And, at the same time, introduced us to the next generation of great British actors…

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt1

In this seventh and final installment of the beloved Harry Potter series, Harry faces new troubles; he must collect all of the Horcruxes that the evil Lord Voldemort has left behind. He has no idea where these are and he has to destroy them all, even without the faintest idea how to do so.

The Best of the Harry Potter Series brought to the screen...Simply Brilliant...PERIOD!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I : A Review

Ten years ago, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone introduced the world to Harry Potter, the little wizard known as “The Boy Who Lived”. We all watched the events and scenes unfold in the same complete awe and wonder that Harry felt himself. The first time he walked into Diagon Ally, we amazed at its wonder as he did.  When he first gazed at the majestic splendor of Hogwarts, we experienced it right along with him.

In 2010, the world was finally introduced to “The Chosen One” away from the safe confines of Hogwarts, and without the protection of his mentor, Professor Dumbledore.  We finally get to see our heroes - Ronald Bilius Weasley, Hermione Jean Granger, and Harry James Potter -  thrown into the world alone and on-the-run. 

“These are troubling times indeed, there is no denying it.”

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I is decidedly the best movie in the series.  It opens with a touching scene where we see a teary-eyed Hermione remove every evidence of her existence from her parents memories for their own protection.  It is the first true indication of how alone these characters really are in this quest to destroy Voldemort’s Horcruxes and defeat the forces of evil that seek to kill them. 

During the course of the movie, Harry starts to realize just how little he truly knows about Dumbledore. The Trio soon come to realize how ill prepared they truly are for their quest, not knowing where to find the Horcruxes, and then not knowing how to destroy them once they do have them.  It is this that tests the Trio’s dedication, resolve, and friendship, and threatens to break their seemingly unbreakable bond…all while having to stay one step ahead of the Death-Eaters who seek to capture them, and bring them before the Dark Lord.

In the end, this movie – Part I of II – is more about fortifying their resolve and solidifying their friendship, than it is about the search for Horcruxes.  Because, when the final battle between good and evil is fought, it is their friendship, love, and trust in each other, which will truly be needed to defeat the evil forces which seek to rule the world, both magical and muggle.

Based on the best book in the series, it so far lives up to expectations...being clearly the best Movie of the Series to date...

The final confrontation between Harry and Voldemort is fast approaching…Hold on to your seats folks, the ending is going to be spectacular!

MPF (Metro Playoff Fever) is here! All Hail Estonia!

San Jose, CA – Seven Months ago, the New York Red Bulls graced the field at Red Bull Arena for the first time.  In front of a sold-out crowd of 25,000, they dispatch the much heralded Santos FC of Brazil 3-1.  The first EVER goal at the crown-jewel of MLS was scored by a little known Estonian international named Joel Lindpere.

One week later, the New York Red Bulls suited up for their Regular season debut against the Chicago Fire in front of another sold-out crowd, and again the little known Estonian would be the one to score the first EVER Regular Season goal at Red Bull Arena.

Fast-forward seven months to the final game of the 2010 Regular Season, with the Red Bulls needing a win against the New England Revolution to clinch 1st place in the Eastern Conference and secure homefield advantage throughout the playoffs, nursing a 1-0 lead on a goal by the newly resurgent Jamaican, Dane Richards, Joel Lindpere sealed the victory and capped off the miraculous worst-to-first turnaround for the Red Bulls with the LAST regular season goal this season at Red Bull Arena.  So, having dispatched the Revolution 2-0 at home, the Red Bulls hit the road to San Jose to face the San Jose Earthquakes in the first round of the MLS Playoffs as the #1 seed in the East.

The first 45 minutes saw the Red Bulls withstand some early pressure from the home team and eventually begin to dominate possession.  With only Quakes goalkeeper (John Busch) preventing the Red Bulls from scoring on several occasions, the game ended 0-0 at halftime.  The second-half began with the Red Bulls applying significant attacking pressure which eventually paid-off in the 55th minute.  And, of course having already solidified himself as a Red Bull Legend and walking trivia question, Joel Lindpere added to his mystical aura by pouncing on an errant rebound, sliding through the Quakes defense, and placing a shot to the far post past a diving John Busch, scoring the first Red Bull goal of the 2010 MLS Playoffs.

On Thursday, the New York Red Bulls march into Red Bull Arena holding a 1-0 advantage in the 2 game total goals elimination series over San Jose.  We await to see what else the now known Estonian hero can pull out of his magical mystery hat.

Our European Adventure will soon begin.

From Hatton to Victoria,
We’ll treat ya well ‘ere gouvna.
Buckingham was a regal palace,
Decked in gold from hilt to trellis.

We walked with Lions to Charing Cross,

5000 years through history to Stonehenge.

On the fields where they did loom.
They’re purpose is a great mystery,

Whether signifying death or celebrating life,
Commemorating happiness or mourning strife.
Regardless, one truth is clearly definite,
This mystery will remain infinite.

On the Thames, afloat we did dine,
On foie gras, salmon, and wine.
From Big Ben Parliament and the London Eye,
Under Millennium and London to the Tower High.

It’s Bouna Time! It’s Playoff Time!

Goalkeeper, Bouna Coundoul led the New York Red Bulls to the 2010 MLS playoffs by playing the best game of his career.  Making 12 Saves on the night, he very deservedly earned Man-of-the-Match honors, and recorded a new team record by earning his 10th Shutout of the season, breaking Tony Meola’s previous record set in the inaugural season in 1996. 

Dane Richards scored his 4th goal of the season in the 6th minute of the game, and for the remaining 84 minutes it was Bouna Time!  With the win, besides clinching a playoff berth, coupled with Columbus’s 0-0 draw with San Jose, the Red Bulls pull into full possession of 1st Place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 14-8-5 47 Points (one point better than the Crew). 

Next week they play the defending MLS Cup Champions, Real Salt Lake 4PM at Red Bull Arena.

On Thursday Oct 21st, They end the regular season by facing the New England Revolution 7:30PM at Red Bull Arena.

Oh Dane…Oh Dane…Oh Dane…Red Bull Friendlies Give You Wings! (Or, Defenders Give You Space)

Dane Richards is an interesting conundrum…most of the time he plays like crap.  A one-trick pony which most MLS defenses have figured out.  He’s got great speed, but a very small soccer brain, often dribbling himself either into the endline or into triple coverage.  And, his crosses leave a lot to be desired.  But, then on some rare occasions, especially against unfamiliar foreign competition, he manages to play like a maniac.

In the Grand-Opening Friendly exhibition against Santos FC of Brazil, Dane used his speed to terrorize the Santos’ defenders all game, eventually scoring on a blistering shot to seal the 3-1 victory.  Today, against Manchester City, Dane created an exceptional win by using his speed to beat defender, Wayne Bridge to the ball, and then crossed a perfect ball into Macoumba Kandji for the 1-0 lead.  Then in the second half, with the game tied up at 1-1, Dane raced down the wing, into space, and fired a shot from 30 yards out off the crossbar and into the net to give the Red Bulls the lead and eventual 2-1 win. 

Now, if Dane could do that against MLS competition in a meaningful game, then the Red Bulls would be practically unbeatable.  Unfortunately, I expect that he’ll be back to his one-trick pony, impotent ways soon enough…Or maybe Henry will be a good influence on him, but I won’t hold my breath.

Get These Guys Some Viagra

A beautiful summer night with a loud and boisterous crowd awaiting the introduction of the man of the hour, Thierry Henry.  The players lined up for pre-game introductions, Tottenham on one side, the NY Red Bulls on the other.  The boos rained down as the Tottenham players were introduced. 

Then came the Red Bull intros, and the players received their customary applause.  The announcer ran through the starting lineup with his usual enthusiasm…”at Forward #10…Macooooooumba Kaaaaandji”…eventually he reached “Midfielder #33 Carl Robinson…AND MAKING HIS NEW YORK RED BULL DEBUT…” and you could hardly hear a word the announcer was saying after that, but through the deafening roar you could just barely make out…”AT FORWARD…#14…THIERRYYYY HEEEENRYYYY!”

In following this team for 15 years, I have only heard one instance of the crowd being louder than they were for Henry’s introduction, and that was in the 26th minute when Henry scored his first ever goal as a NY Red Bull, giving them a 1-0 lead over English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspurs. 

But, as expected, Henry was subbed out at halftime, and being that these are the Red Bulls, inevitably they would find a way to ruin the festivities.  Juan Pablo Angel, nursing an injury, was left out of the lineup…and with Henry now a spectator on the bench…the remaining Red Bulls, while outplaying Tottenham for most (if not all) of the game, were unable to take advantage of their opportunities.  And, as customary when dominating a game without scoring, defensive errors cost them the game.  Both, errors can be attributed to brainfarts by backup (NOTE “Backup”) goalkeeper, Greg Sutton.

So, I say let’s take up a collection and get these guys some Viagra, because without Angel and Henry, they are just shooting blanks!

What a Train Wreck!

Well…Ok…so much for Henry joining a first place team! The supposed battle for the Eastern Conference Lead, ended up being one team bending over all game long, and the other sticking their foot up in their ass!

It was a game with absolutely nothing to watch for Red Bull fans, yet you couldn’t help but look at this complete and utter train wreck…Blood pressure rising with every tick of the clock. 

With Thierry Henry watching from a luxury box at Columbus Crew Stadium, the new look Red Bulls looked more like the Same Ole Metros!  The 2-0 scoreline does not do the complete domination by the Crew justice…It was just plain embarrassing.

Vive La France! Vive La Revolution! Vive Les Taureaux Rouge!

New York City...The Tri-State Area...An area so rich in sports history and tradition that it manages to hold 2 Major League Baseball teams (NYY, NYM), 2 National Football League teams (NYG, NYJ), 2 Basketball teams (NYK, NJN), and 3 Hockey teams (NYR, NYI, NJD). 

Well don't look now, but there's a 10th area team making some noise! Yes, that's right the NEW YORK RED BULLS of Major League Soccer have thrust themselves into the spotlight.  By signing perhaps the best, most successful soccer player of this generation, Thierry Henry, to a 4 1/2 year contract, the Red Bull Organization has EXCLAIMED that they are for real, and they are here to stay.  And, according to everyone in charge, this is not all; this is just the beginning. 

Everyone made great hype about David Beckham signing with the LA Galaxy, and with good reason.  He is clearly the most recognizable Footballer in the world.  But, as far as talent and accomplishment, Beckham doesn't come close to Thierry Henry. 

Henry made his professional debut in 1994 with Monaco of the French First Division.  During the 1996-97 season, he was named the French Young Footballer of the Year, and helped Monaco capture the French Ligue 1 title.  In 1997-98, he set a French record by scoring seven goals in the UEFA Champions’ League, leading his team to the semi-finals.

In 1998, he was a member of the French World Cup winning team, where he lead the team in scoring with 3 goals.  To date, Henry appeared in 118 games for France, including 4 World Cups (‘98, ‘02, ‘06, ‘10), and has scored 51 goals…the most in French National team history.

He played for English Premier League club Arsenal from 1999-2007.  During his time at the London club, he appeared in 369 games, while scoring 226 goals and assisting on 92 others. He remains Arsenal’s All-time Leading Goal Scorer.  He led the club to 2 league titles (2001-02, 2003-04), and 3 FA Cup titles (2002, 2003, 2005) during his stay in North London.

In 2007, he joined Spanish powerhouse Barcelona.  During the 2008-09 season, Henry scored an amazing 26 goals in 42 games, while assisting 12 times, and along with teammates, Lionel Messi and Samuel Eto’o, formed an attacking trio which combined to score 100 goals for the club that season.  He was an instrumental part of Barcelona becoming the first (and only) team in history to win a sextuple.  The sextuple consists of titles in La Liga (2008-09), Copa del Rey (2008-09), and Supercopa de España (2009), also known as the Treble; in addition to winning the UEFA Champions League (2008-09), UEFA Super Cup (2009), and the FIFA Club World Cup (2009).

Henry now joins a team currently in 2nd place behind Eastern Conference leading Columbus. He could however find himself on a 1st place team by the time he suits-up, if the Red Bulls are able to beat the division leaders on Saturday in Columbus.  Trailing the Crew by only 2 points, a win would propel them into first place in the Eastern Conference before Thierry Henry even plays a game. 

And, the latest word is that a 3rd Designated Player will be added in the next 2 weeks…the leading rumor being that Henry’s Barcelona teammate, (and Mexican National Team Player) Rafael (Rafa) Marquez will be that signing.  Also, a member of the sextuple winning team.

Regardless of the next signing, it’s very clear that these are not your daddy’s Red Bulls!

When Angels Fall

Born Elisa da Nazaré Rainho in the tiny village of Serra do Bouro in the Municipality of Caldas Da Rainha, Portugal on May 15, 1926.  She married Joaquim Antunes on December 24, 1951, and they were married for 58 years.  Two years later, their first child, Maria Elisa Rainho Antunes, was born December 7, 1953.  And, after Immigrating to the United States, she gave birth to the first American Born Antunes, George Rainho Antunes, on February 17, 1967. 

She survived to witness the marriage of her daughter to Abilio Morgado Martins on August 25, 1974.  She survived to witness the birth of her first Granddaughter, Melissa Antunes Martins, on November 30, 1978, and her second Granddaughter, Jessica Antunes Martins, on January 29, 1984.  But, she also survived to witness the deaths of her mother (age 92) and her two sisters, being survived only by her older brother, who will turn 91 later this year.  And, she survived long enough to share one last piece of cake with her children on her 84th birthday.  She died one week later.

She was a woman with The heart of a Saint and the Soul of an Angel.  A proud mother, grandmother, and housewife.  

She is at peace among the stars.  She can fall no more.

USOC: Baby Bulls Win Again

HARRISON, NJ - The New York Red Bulls defeated the New England Revolution, 3-0, in their 2nd Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Play-in game at Red Bull Arena.  RBNY fielded a team of reserves and part-time first teamers for the second time, and for the second time, the Baby Bulls handily beat their opponent.  Like the previous game, where the Baby Bulls defeated Philly 2-1, the 3-0 scoreline was misleading, as the Red Bulls were the better team from start to finish. 5-0 would have been a more justified scoreline.  They had several opportunities where they came close, but ultimately those chances went begging.  Rookie Conor Chinn missing from pointblank range in the first half with the team already leading 1-0.

The first half ended 1-0 on a goal by the Staten Island Flash, John Wolyniec.  The play was started by a perfect pinpoint pass, by Danish Midfielder Brian Nielsen, which sent Rookie Conor Chinn one-v-one against the goalkeeper.  His telegraphed shot to the far post, however was deflected out by the Revs goalkeeper, but right to an open John Wolyniec.  Wolyniec fired a shot past the helpless goalkeeper, but the shot rocketed off the defender back to Wolyniec, where the SI Flash sent a second shot slamming into the net.  So, mark that down, 3 shots on goal, 1 goal. 

Throughout the rest of the first half, the Red Bulls continued to press and dominate the Revs defense, with Conor Chinn missing several opportunities to widen the gap. 

In the second half, RBNY continued its dominance over the undermanned Revs with Brian Nielsen causing havoc on the left wing all day.  In the 62 minute, after a foul just outside the box, Nielsen lined-up to take the freekick.  With all the Revs expecting him to cross it into the box, Nielsen squared the ball to Sinisa, who’s onetime grassburner found it’s way into the left side of the net, extending the lead to 2-0.  Then shortly there after, the Staten Island Flash again got on the end of a rebound in the box, putting away his second of the game, and setting the final margin of victory at 3-0. 

The Baby Bulls continued to have chances to add to their tally, while the Revs never really tested RBNY Goalkeeper Greg Sutton, who earned his first shutout.

Next up for the Baby Bulls…Colorado.  Bring it!

Speedy Pacquiao Demolishes Clottey in Flawless Victory

Deep in the heart of Texas, standing in a ring positioned on the Dallas Star on the 50 yardline of Dallas Cowboys Stadium, otherwise known as, Jerryworld, and in front of the 3rd largest crowd to ever attend a boxing event (50,994), Manny Pacquiao stood ready for battle.  Across the ring, Joshua Clottey prepared his game plan…peek-a-boo defense.  During the course of a football game, teams go through three fazes…offense, defense, and special teams.  Manny Pacquiao came fully prepared to utilize his whole repertoire.  Unfortunately, Clottey chose to face Manny by hiding behind his gloves for 90% of the fight.  The few times he attempted to throw a punch he actually hit Pacquiao, but those moments were few and far between.

To be fair, Clottey didn’t really have any chance of beating Pacquiao…Manny was much faster, quicker, and more consistent throughout the fight.  He showed exceptional hand speed and determination in getting around, over, or under Clottey’s defenses.  His offense was flawless, his defense was adequate when it was needed, and what truly set Manny apart was his special teams (in this case his heart). Clottey was the challenger, but never even tried to TAKE Manny’s belt from him…he was just content to survive.  Any opponent coming into Cowboys Stadium looking just to survive will always leave a loser…Risk is at the heart of all competition, and Clottey took absolutely no risks. As a result, Manny secured a decisively flawless victory which was a complete shutout by my scorecard (see below) as well as one of the judges and the AP.  The other two judges were feeling generous in giving the final round to Clottey, but despite his willingness to trade, most in attendance agreed that Manny still did enough to win it.

This fight was supposed to be between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr but as I predicted after Manny’s last fight (http://georgeantunes.blogspot.com/2009/11/we-want-floyd.html) that fight never materialized.  Now, Mayweather is fighting “Sugar” Shane Mosley on May 1st, and presumably the winner will fight Pacquiao.  If Mosley wins, which he most certainly is capable of doing, then I am confident that an agreement with Manny will surely be made…as far as Mayweather is concerned, I’ll believe it when I see it.

On the undercard, José Luis Castillo attempted to make a comeback fighting former “The Contender” contestant, Alfonso Gomez.  But, during the course of the fight it became more and more evident that Castillo was just trying to earn his paycheck to help his ever increasing debts.  By the time the fight reached the 5th round of the 10 round fight, and after Gomez dominated the fight on everyone’s scorecards, Castillo called it quits without ever going down…he just withdrew at the end of the 5th, never intending to come out for the 6th. However, still happily collecting his paycheck.  I had Gomez pitching a shutout (50-45) 5 Round to none at the time.

And, in the last Undercard, Humberto Soto faced David Diaz for the WBC Lightweight Title in a 12-round championship fight.  Humberto Soto entered the ring with 50 wins, 7 loses, 2 draws, with 32 Knockouts, while Diaz came in with 35 wins, 2 loses, 1 draw, with 17 Knockouts.  The fight was much more competitive, but in the end Soto won unanimously, starting and ending the fight with 10-8 rounds.  My Score card below.

Guess Who’s Coming

rb_reader Previously, I’ve mentioned how the New York Red Bulls will be hosting Santos FC of São Paulo on March 20th for their Grand Opening of the new stadium.

What most people who don’t follow European soccer (English Premier League, in particular) hadn’t realized is the added bonus which Santos will be bringing with them to Red Bull Arena.

Recently, a rather overpriced and overhyped signing from the other Manchester team (ie. Manchester City) secured a loan deal to return to his hometown team in São Paulo.  So, as a result, Pelé’s former team now also became the current home of homecoming hero (and former Man City and Real Madrid player), Robinho.  Those of us who follow soccer closely realize that this homecoming deal is as important to the Brazilian community as Christiano Ronaldo returning to Sporting Lisbon would be to the Portuguese community. Bring on the Samba dancers! See you at the stadium.

Stage Is Set

The New York Red Bulls have had a busy preseason so far. 

They started by hiring a new braintrust with the appointments of Eric Soler as GM/Sporting Director and Hans Backe as Head Coach, while reacquiring the services of former interim head coach, Richie Williams as assistant coach and longtime goalkeepers coach, Des McAlleenan.

Then they selected a talented core of young prospects in the draft. Red Bull New York added five players to their roster at theRed Bulls 1st round picks Tony Tchani and Austin Da Luz meet New York's supporters. (RBNY) 2010 MLS SuperDraft, held at the Philadelphia Convention Center in Philadelphia, PA. New York selected University of Virginia midfielder Tony Tchani and Wake Forest University midfielder Austin Da Luz in the first round (2nd, 14th overall, respectively), Saint Louis University defender Tim Ream in the second round (18th), University of San Francisco forward Conor Chinn in the third round (34th) and University of California - Irvine midfielder/forward Irving Garcia in the fourth round (50th).

Currently, the team is in La Manga, Spain participating in the La Manga tournament.  On Monday, February 1st, the Red Bulls complete their stay when they take on Norway's Stromsgodset IF at 9AM EST.  On January 25th, The Red Bulls took on 2009/10 Russian UEFA Champions League participants, CSKA Moscow and played them to a hard fought 1-1 draw. 

They followed that up by defeating a talented Lech Poznan of Poland  Juan Pablo Angel's first preseason goal was the game-winner against Lech Poznan. (RBNY) by riding an early Juan Pablo Angel goal, and a staunch defensive effort to a 1-0 victory.  They are scheduled to return to the US on February 4th. 

Meanwhile, on this coast, the stage has been set for the Soft, Grand, and Home Openers for the new crown jewel of MLS, Red Bull Arena.

The Soft Open will be a match on March 13th which will feature the Under-18 Red Bulls Academy team against the Under-17 US Men’s National Team.  Admission is free.
