The Weekly Rant

The Weekly Rant
A Guest Post by Larry D. Smith

I am saddened by the recent posts comparing the working poor’s desire to make $15/hr in comparison to the military. First of all, we all have different backgrounds and experiences that make us who we are. It seems to me it's very self-serving to publicly beat your chest and extol your superior virtues for having flipped burgers at some point in your life, but now look down on those who now work two jobs just to get by.
Make no mistake, I have made decisions that were not in my best interest; however, I learned from my mistakes and gradually moved on. As a Vietnam era vet, I can tell you first hand that this country has not always appreciated military service to the extent they do today. It is, at least, comforting to know that, sometimes, things change for the better, but, at the same time, it amazes me how so many of the 1% stick their chest out and say "that used to be me". I think it even goes further than that..." I have kicked, scraped, and clawed my way to the top and have no intentions of ever looking back". If you subscribe to trickle-down economics then everything in the world is as it should be, except that, "adjusted for inflation, the minimum wage is currently 20% less than it was in 1967--which is why so many people still eat at McDonald's".
By the way, what exactly are Conservatives saying with their post? Screw the poor, give the military a raise? I don't care about bottom-rung workers who are encouraged by their employer to work two jobs and provide NOTHING in their theoretical budget for heat? All this advice comes at a time of record profits. McDonald's CEO, Donald Thompson, was awarded a compensation package totaling $13.8 million in 2012. Company jet, stock options, etc. but no heat in the employee budget!
While I'm at it, I would like to point out that there is a shopping list of additional pay our service members receive. While accurate, the misleading post that references the lowly private E1's starting pay as $18378/year ($1531/month) is incomplete. For service members who are deployed to combat areas there is Special & Incentive pay that includes up to $150/month depending on Quality of Life (fox hole vs. more secure area), an additional $225/month for Hostile Fire/Imminent Danger, $800/month Assignment Incentive Pay (involuntary extension), $150/month for Hazardous Duty Pay (Parachuting, ordnance demolition, etc, a housing allowance for when married service members live off-base ($1686/month), clothing allowance, relocation expenses, a family separation allowance of $250/month and finally, a family subsistence supplemental allowance that is meant to help lower ranking enlisted with large families avoid food stamps. So, for all the folks who instantly lap-up the Conservative disinformation, think again; with the additional pay cited above, our troops can easily exceed $15/hour.
I strongly support every penny the military receives, especially the lower ranks; however, the disingenuous nature of the post, to which I am referring, only leaves one conclusion...screw the poor. In fact, if you look at the stats, the McDonald's workforce is increasingly comprised of FAMILIES, not just single teens. Oh, and FYI, McDonald's workers are being paid $14.50/hour in Australia! Let's be honest about this...the minimum wage isn't going to double over night. There are still some states in the south that have NO minimum wage, while some like California and Washington have voluntarily gone to the $10 minimum mark. Many states have increases planned for the next couple of years that will get the minimum to $10/hour. So, for the 1% who can't fathom an almost livable wage of $15/hour, I say, where is your compassion for your fellow Americans? Would the increase in the price of a burger prevent you from buying that new car? I doubt it. In fact, I suspect that most of the people sharing the referenced post don't even eat at McDonald's. As far as I'm concerned, the mask is off, many of those who have dug themselves out of poverty with hard work have, in fact, forgotten their roots. There is a big difference between being a lazy benefit seeker and working two jobs that still won't get you to a basic level of subsistence.
There is still plenty of unemployed who were once managers making a comfortable upper middle-class living. Because the economy tanked due to sub-prime mortgages and "too big to fail", the layoffs hit with a vengeance. A situation, from which, we still haven't recovered. By Conservative standards, all those workers are now fodder under their heels. They have had their unemployment benefits extended how many times? Many still can't find work and have stopped looking. So, where are we? We now have an even larger base of McDonald's class workers that the right wing doesn't care about (at least as evidenced by the original thinly disguised "patriotic" post).
So, as an Independent and a moderate, I say to you, go ahead, post on, but rest assured, there are plenty of us sitting on the fence who have seen the true face of the greedy. I challenge all the "Constitutionalists" to explain how the taxpayers should be saddled with the debt and resulting economy created by private investment companies. According to what I've been reading and hearing, the same scenario may rear its ugly head again in the not too distant future; but that's OK, at least those McDonald's workers were held in check.

Iron Man set the stage…Robert Downey Jr embodied the flamboyant playboy Tony Stark with exceptional ease.  And the Avenger Initiative was successfully introduced.

Edward Norton, being a passionate fan of the Bill Bixby Incredible Hulk, absolutely brought the big man to the big screen in a way never before accomplished.

MV5BMTYxMjA5NDMzNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTk2Mjk3NA@@._V1._SY317_

Chris Hemsworth did an exceptional job portraying the Norse God of Thunder in the big-budget incarnation from the great mind of Kenneth Branagh.

And, finally Chris Evans embodied the World War II Super-Soldier Steve Rogers who became known worldwide as Captain America,

Along the way, characters were introduced, linking the films together into one universe.  Characters such as Samuel L. Jackson as SHIELD Director Nick Fury, Clarke Gregg as SHIELD Agent Coulson, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye.

Now that the stage has been successfully set, the Marvel universe is completely ready to explode on the big screen with the greatest collection of Marvel Superheroes together on the same stage in Marvel’s The Avengers…Often regarded as the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

The Marvel’s Avengers has already set records world-wide with a total of $178.4M in the world-wide box-office, and with the advanced ticket sales in the US already surpassing the previous movies in the Avengers’ universe combined, the Avenger’s will not be a success, but will completely blow away the competition, and set a new standard for Comic-book movies that will leave fanboys creaming in their pants for years to come!

Some Assembly Required!

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!

Metros win but lose Henry

rb_reader

The NY Red Bulls faced the NE Revolution at Red Bull Arena coming off of an embarrassing lose to their most hated rivals, DC United at RFK Stadium, 4-1.  Henry managed to score the only goal in that game in highlight reel fashion.  Converting a free kick just outside the box into his 8th goal in 7 games.

Returning to the friendly confines of Red Bull Arena where they have been unbeatable, they faced a familiar rival in the New England Revolution.  But, fielding a lineup which was without 4 starters, the Red bulls lined-up with local Rookie Connor Lade on the Left and Rookie Tyler Ruthven in the Center…with backup Brandon Barklage on the right…the only starter in the much maligned backline was shaky at best  S. Markus Holgersson.  In midfield, missing Defensive stalwart Teemo Tainio and underachieving overpriced high-profile Rafa Marquez, they instituted a midfield of Joel Lindpere in the attacking center, Dax MaCarty in the Defensive Center, and Mehdi Ballouchy and Dane Richards on the wings.  Up top the two forwards were the dominate pairing of Kenny Cooper and Thierry Henry.

The Red Bulls totally dominated the first 25 minutes of the game.  Henry scored his league–leading 9th goal in the 7th minute off of an assist from rookie Connor Lade, but the unthinkable soon happened…Thierry Henry went down untouched!  The most horrible sight in soccer is seeing someone go down untouched.  Usually, those kinds of injuries turn into 4-6 weeks, if not the whole season.  In the end, Henry will be out 3-4 weeks, which is a case of good-bad news.

The Red Bull’s makeshift backline held on with the help of Rookie goalkeeper Ryan Meara earning him Man-of-the-Match honors as well as his first MLS Career Shutout.  But, now the Red Bulls hit the road without their Captain, and the early clear-cut leader for League MVP, and without 5 starters in their lineup.  This is where Hans Backe can prove or disprove his coaching ability.

The Red Bulls are holding on to 3rd place in the Eastern Conference, but how long will depend on how well they can continue to get points with a makeshift lineup…at least until some of the starters start to return to the lineup.

Let Go Red Bulls!

NY Giants in Superbowl XLVI

NY Giants

The Giants finished the 2011-12 Regular season needing to beat the Dallas Cowboys to clinch the NFC East and thus making the playoffs.  So, they went ahead and did just that, finishing the season at 9-7, and ending with the 4th seed in the NFL Playoffs.

100px-Atlanta_Falcons_logo.svg

In the first round they hosted the Atlanta Falcons, and quickly dismissed them from the playoffs, 24-2…

393207_2491047323345_1467612156_31998885_170508324_n

Then they moved on to the Number 1 seeded Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.  A rematch of the 2007 NFC Championship…the last time the Giants were in the playoffs.  Again, they dominated…this time a supposedly superior team and quarterback, 37-20.  Many delusional Packers fans shed tears after that embarrassing lose.

Then in the NFC Championship game, they faced they’re toughest opponent to date in the form of the San Francisco 49ers.  But, with grit, determination, and a little luck they defeated the last obstacle between them and the Superbowl, 20-17.

Now, as the 2011 NFC Champion, the NY Football Giants move on to Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis, IN to face a familiar opponent, the NE Patriots.  In a rematch of Super Bowl  XLII, where the 18-0 NE Patriots faced the wildcard upstart NY Giants, the 2011 Giants look to keep Eli Manning’s undefeated streak against the Pats.

Let’s Go…Big Blue!  Superbowl victory #4 is within sight with Eli Manning having the best season in his career…and they face the Patriots in brother Peyton’s home stadium, Lucas Oil Stadium.

Good Luck Giants!

The Origins of (the word) Soccer

The Origins of the word Soccer....like the sport itself originated in England.

For those that don't know, don't care, and/or are too stupid to look it up, the OFFICIAL name of Soccer/Football/Futbal is association football.

Americans that continuously complain..."why not call it football like everyone else" Are ignorant about the origins of soccer in the first place.  The better question would be, why don't Americans call it "Throwball" instead of "Football"...Since you don't ever use your foot for anything, except running (exception the kicker/punter).

Association Football was codified in the UK in 1863, at which point the term Association Football was coined to distinguish it from rugby football.  The word soccer is a colloquial abbreviation from the word asSOCiation.  The Brits at that time had a propensity to shorten names for their own convenience.

It was common practice in England to use the names football and soccer interchangeably until the 1970s.

And, the misguided opinion that the US calls it soccer while the rest of the world calls it football is wrong.  First, ignoring the obvious instances of countries that don't speak English, even within English speaking countries, the US is not alone in referring to it as soccer.  Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States refer to the world’s most popular sport as soccer...a word originated as an English Colloquial abbreviation for the true name, "Association Football".

You may return to your regularly scheduled programs!

Big Blue Wrecking Crew

Giants v Cowboys

The Giants’ season was on the line.  The Dallas Cowboys were in 1st place at 7-5, and the Giants were riding a 4 game losing streak at 6-6.  If the Giants managed to win they would tie Dallas, and hold the tie-breaker against Dallas…propelling them into 1st place in the NFC East with 3 games remaining at Met Life Stadium.  They would have the season entirely in their hands.

Giants marched into Arlington, Texas looking for a win, and holding an undefeated streak at the new $1.3B Stadium.

In a thrilling game, where the lead changed several times, Eli Manning proved himself an Elite 4th Quarter Quarterback by leading them down the field with under 2-minutes left in the game trailing by 5 points, 34-29.

With 46 Seconds left in the game, Brandon Jacobs punched it in on the 8th lead change of the game, and after a successful 2-point conversion the Giants took a 37-34 lead, leaving the Cowboys 45 seconds to try and tie.

Tony Romo lead the team down the field, and into field goal range.  The Dallas kicker lined up for a game tying 47yd field goal which appeared to be good, but Tom Coughlin called a timeout just before the kick.  So, the kicker lined up for a second attempt at the game tying 47yd field goal.  However, this time Jason-Pierre Paul got up and deflected the kick, and the Giants won the game by a final score of 37-34.

Now the Giants are tied with the Cowboys at 7-6 (holding the tie-breaker) with 3 games remaining in the regular season.  All 3 games will be at their home stadium (Met Life Stadium).  They will host the redskins, play against the Jets (away), and end the season at Met Life Stadium on New Year’s Day against these same Dallas Cowboys with the division possibly at stake.  But, at the moment the Giants hold the upper hand in the division.

Eli Manning once again proved he deserves (at least) consideration in the debate about the top 5 Quarterbacks in the league.

In my book, I would place Eli at #5 behind…#1 Aaron Rodgers, #2 Tom Brady, #3 Drew Brees, and #4 Ben Roethlisberger.

But, that’s just my opinion.

Enjoy the stretch run Giants’ fans…it should be fun…it definitely won’t be boring!

Go G-Men!

Fox News Viewers Are Stupid?

That question will always be up to interpretation according to your own ideological point of view, but Fairleigh Dickinson University tried to scientifically prove this to be true.  And according to their press release they have done just that.  Unequivocally?

It must have been unequivocal, because the news was important enough for the Huffington Post to report it.

Fox News Viewers Know Less Than People Who Don't Watch Any News: Study – Huffington Post

Now…who am I to question the bastion of unbiased reporting that is the Huffington Post…There is never EVER any liberal spin on their site.

Gas Station Employee: I'm starting to picking up your sarcasm.
Richard Hayden: Well, I should hope so, because I'm laying it on pretty thick.
       - Tommy Boy (1995)

Let me begin by stating a well known axiom…"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."

This is supposed to be a meaningful study?!

I know facts tend to get in the way of personal ideologies, but Let’s get some actual facts here.

The first sentence in the press release from Fairleigh Dickenson states…

According to the latest results from Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind Poll,
some news sources make us less likely to know what’s going on in the world.

But, let’s start by reading the first question they ask…

K1:  Americans now have more ways than ever before to get their news about politics and world affairs. I’m going to read you a list of news sources. As I read the list, just say “yes” if you got news from that source any time in the past week.

Then they ask a series of 5 questions about Egypt, Syria, Occupy Wall Street, Presidential Candidates. and the European Debt crisis.  So, looking at the table above, Most people get their information from a Local Newspaper (74%)…followed by Local TV (67%), CNN (65%), and Fox News(64%).  The lowest sources of information are (in reverse order from lower to higher) The Daily Show (18%), NPR (21%), and Sunday Morning News (27%).  NOTE: They don’t mention it, but from the way the question was worded, and judging by the numbers, there is most certainly overlap.

Then from the information on their page for questions 2 and 3, 49% and 45% of Fox News viewers answered correctly (the lowest percentage) while 68% and 66% of NPR listeners answered correctly (the highest percentage).  BUT…NPR only has 21% of respondents while Fox News has 64%.

So, let’s back up a little.

What exactly are the parameters of this survey?  As stated in their release, the survey was…

”…conducted by telephone from Oct. 17, 2011, through Oct. 23, 2011, using a randomly selected sample of 612 resident adults statewide.  The margin of error for a sample of 612 randomly selected respondents is +/- 3.5 percentage points.  The margin of error for subgroups is larger and varies by the size of that subgroup.”

This survey involves 612 randomly selected residents in NJ.  They surveyed 612 people in a state with over 8,791,894 (US Census 2010) people…that’s approximately 0.007%, and in a country with 312,657,207 people that percentage is even more microscopically small.

But, for the sake of argument let’s analyze the first 3 questions.

K1:
Fox New Viewers: 64% of the 612 surveyed is approximately 392.
NPR Listeners: 21% of the 612 is approximately 129

K2:
Fox News Viewers: 49% of 392 is approximately 192 Correct Answers
NPR Listeners: 68% of 129 is approximately 88 Correct Answers

K3:
Fox News Viewers: 45% of 392 is approximately 176 Correct Answers
NPR Listeners: 66% of 129 is approximately 85 Correct Answers

But…hey don’t let facts stand in the way…Never have before. (Hello….I’m speaking to both of you!)

So, what CAN we conclude from this “study”?  That people will believe anything as long as it fits their own ideological beliefs.

But, like I said, who am I to question such awesome institutions as Fairleigh Dickenson and the Huffington Post…right?!

Gas Station Employee: I'm starting to picking up your sarcasm.
Richard Hayden: Well, I should hope so, because I'm laying it on pretty thick.
- Tommy Boy (1995)
